A Perfect 100....

According to CPE we are ranked at 100 (out of 100) for energy usage in our neighborhood.  I'm going to take that as WE WIN!  (Mid winter I take positive encouragement wherever I can get it. )

But in truth it's discouraging since we really have been trying to lower our energy usage...new windows over the summer, caulking every draft I can find, keeping the thermostat at 68' in the day and 58' at night.  We have the challenge of the house being full of people 24/7 and even with sweaters and socks there are cold places we have to heat with space heaters. Oh well - spring will come again and we will think up new ways to keep the house warm.  I know our furnaces need replacing and there is always insulation in the walls that could help.  Until then.....I will simply laugh and give out high fives because WE GOT A PERFECT 100!

Hi Dorothy,
You are probably already aware of this, Community Action of Mpls is constantly looking for people to grant energy efficient upgrades to their house.
Several years ago we were given a new furnace and they insulated our walls(blew insulation in) for free! We were amazed at how much it decreased our heating bill the next winter. A huge gift!
Blessings!

Congrats! LOL :) I'm sure the energy usage per person per hour is much lower than other families where there are less people. Plus, you guys are home during the day. And with all the improvements you've done, it's better than it would have been!

It always bothers me that energy use (and price per kwh) is rated by household, not by how many people are in the household. A single person in a large house may use less energy than you, but will be using much more per person. That person may be charged less per kwh, even though he may be wasting it. You have 13 people taking showers, washing and drying clothes, cooking, and even occupying many rooms at once. I would look again to see if you qualify for energy assistance. In our state, CA, if anyone in the household gets another kind of assistance, like Medical, then you qualify for a reduced rate, regardless of income.
