Net Flix for Homeschooling? Any input?

Ok - I admit it. We use DVD's for some of our homeschooling. This week the older kids and I watched Amazing Grace (after listening to an audio biography of John Newton) and discussed the abolition of the slave trade. I'm not sure if we are headed into a fit of Horatio Hornblower next or not, but the Planet Earth DVD set has always been a favorite and for some of my kids watching is the best was to learn.

So....anyone use Net Flix? Any opinions about plans, availability or how the process works in real life? We have dried up our local libraries supply and I am tired of overdue fees when we get off track.

Can't recommend it enough! Love it, best move we made. We have the plan with 3 movies at a time, very efficient too. My last trip to the library with the late movie fees cost over $20!!! Love being able to watch online as well a large selection of films, old TV show (Dick Van Dyke etc.., and some cute cartoons, and a plethora of documentaries.

Netflix is the best! They have an overwhelming number of documentaries and nature shows. If it's released on DVD, they have it. I'm a big fan. We live close to the distribution center so we get a DVD sent back to us in 2-3 days tops. We are on the unlimited 3 DVDs at a time plan and it's about $20 though I think the prices have come down. My brother is on the one DVD at a time option.

Go for it!

Love, Jolie-Anne

Hey Dorothy,

We used NetFlix once, on a trial, and I loved it! They just send the DVDs to you (no case... just an envelope) and you send it back in a special envelope they send you... no stamps.

For us, it wasn't worth it to use any of the plans -- we only watch a few movies a month, and I don't usually look for anything that isn't at RedBox. But if you watch enough of them, or you're looking for special ones often enough, it would probably be worth it.

In any case, I DID like the system... how everything worked...and they send them pretty quickly.

Hope that helps!

no thoughts about net flix, but have you considered the Documentary channel? seriously, we would pay for cable just for that. there are bazillions of short (and longer) docs about anything you can imagine. we DVR them like crazy (for ourselves right now). can't wait till my kids are older to pump them full of documentaries! there's no way we could get all those through the library or rentals, or even know they exist. i'm sure netflix would be a thrifty way to get ahold of specific movies/longer docs you want. there's also a show called "how it's made" on another channel that is basically a mini-doc on every item imaginable--how it's made. it's simply fascinating. they usually have about 3 items in one 30 min spot. so i have big plans for adding to our children's education (they'll go to a classical school) through lots of documentaries, the history channel, etc. i never thought i'd say getting cable (last year) is worth it and i actually recommend it, but for the documentary channel and DVR, i do! :)

I highly recommend Netflix!! In the winter we have the 3 disc ($17/mo) at a time plan, and in the lighter/warmer months we go down to 2 at a time ($14/mo). It's easy to switch back and forth. You can rent as many as you want--they send you the next disc in your "queue" as soon as they receive one back.

They also have a great selection of educational (National Geographic, Nova, etc), documentaries, foreign, and kids' films.

This has saved us so much time in picking out movies at the rental store! And much better selection!

Netflix are great! We don't homeschool, but Ben does take the videos to his 5th grade classroom when he feels they are needed for a lesson. We have the 3 at a time plan...2 for the kids and 1 for date night for mom and dad :-) We are in Austin and the turn around is 2 days. 1 for them to get there and then the new are mailed back the same morning the old were received :-) It has saved us a fortune in late fees!

We started out at the 3 movie package - but then realized we didn't need that many - especially because you are able to download movies too (unlmited). So - we dropped to the 1 movies at a time - which is about $9 a month - and totally worth it.

Our homeschooling neighbors use it and love it. Netflix has opened a whole new door for Alaskans to get good stuff.
How was Amazing Grace? We are watching it tonight for our church home group...

Yes! The turn-around is much more reliable and quick than our local library request system will ever be.

We love it! We have the cheapest plan that still gives you online instant viewing and we get one movie at a time in the mail. I love not ever having to pay late fees--lots of selection also. The turn around time is unbelievable!

Mike's been using the online documentaries to supplement the kids' history. There was a pretty bad one about WWII that included many swear words. So, you just need to be vigilent.

Dorothy,
We use Net-flix all the time. We have the 2 movies/month and it works great. The kids have a list of movies that they can get but if there is one that we need for school, it moves to the top of the list. The movies come fast and it is so much more reliable than the library. Nothing against the library, but I can't always time the movies to conincide with when I need them for school - with net flix I can. It has made school much more enjoyable for the little ones. I also use it for lit and have the kids read the book, watch the movie and then do a compare contrast paper (or Venn diagram for the Geoffrey.). It has been the best $5/month that we spend.
